Duplicate Stitch

Saturday, December 2, 3pm-6pm

THIS CLASS HAS REQUIRED HOMEWORK

Drawing on top of your St. st. fabric with a needle and yarn is like painting a picture. You can create endless motifs of color and graphics once you have mastered duplicate stitch. This technique is also a wonderful skill to have if you need to fix a mistake in fair isle or if you want to personalize a knitted gift. Once you know how to work duplicate stitch, the options are endless for how this technique can be applied to your knitting!

3-hour class

Materials:

*100% single ply merino wool in worsted or chunky weight yarn

(Malabrigo “Merino Worsted” is my favorite to teach with.)

Two colors needed. Both colors should be solid (not variegated).

One color should be light, but not white (cream, tan, very light

pink, etc)

Second color should be darker, but not black (blue, purple, dark

pink, etc)

You will need enough of your light color to make your swatch and

have about 20-30 yards in your second color.

*Needles one size smaller than you would normally use to get gauge (You want a slightly tighter fabric than normal.)

*Blunt tip tapestry needle

*Sharp tip tapestry needle

*Scissors

*Highlighter Tape (optional)

*Pen

*Paper

Homework:

Using your light colored yarn, cast on 45 stitches.

Knit 5 rows of garter stitch.

Row 6 (RS): Knit

Row 7 (WS): K5, P35, K5

Repeat last two rows until piece is almost a square.
Knit 5 rows of garter stitch.

Bind off loosely.

Lightly block your piece by pinning it flat (don’t stretch it) and lightly spritz it with water. Let it dry overnight.

Bring swatch to class.
